The Wittelsbach dynasty ruled here in the proud Capital of Bavaria for more than 800 years and until 1918 many of the city’s most notable monuments owed their construction to their patronage. The Residenz is a marvel of European Palace architecture dating from the Renaissance and the Treasury contains superb artefacts, many dating from Byzantine times. The Alte Pinakothek houses an outstanding collection of 14-18th century Old Master paintings, while a short distance outside the city, set in magnificent gardens and parklands, stands the Nymphenburg Palace and the enchanting little hunting lodge the Amalienburg, entirely covered in the Rococo style. The Opera House is the grand setting for the productions that we will see.
