AMSTERDAM
Capital of the Netherlands, home of Rembrandt and Vermeer, city of waterways and ravishing architecture, Amsterdam is an ideal base for an Opera Weekend. There is time to explore by boat, on foot or by hiring a bicycle; the three principal canals lined with their distinctive gabled houses, the Rijksmuseum housing the greatest collection of 16th-18th century paintings, furniture and artefacts, the nearby Van Gogh Museum, Beginhof Almshouses, Rembrandt's House, the 17th century Sephardic Synagogue and Anne Frank's house. There is also an opportunity to visit nearby Haarlem whose 17th century Almshouses now contain the Frans Hals Museum or The Hague with its Royal Palace and Mauritshuis, also containing a rich collection of 17th century Dutch paintings.
