Capital of Hungary on the banks of the Danube, the twin towns of Buda and Pest crown the hills either side, linked by eight bridges. Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings abound and during our time here we have a chance to explore Buda's Historical Museum housed in the medieval and Renaissance Palace, the National Gallery of Hungarian Art from the Middle Ages in the former Royal Palace, and the National Museum with its collection of Sythian gold and the Byzantine crown of St. Stephen. In Pest there is the Fine Art Museum containing a collection of principally Spanish and Italian paintings. The princely Esterhazy patronage of Haydn is reflected in the passionate love of music in this city.
