The Stockholm Opera House began as a tennis court! Opened in 1782 by Gustavus III, it was the scene of his assassination by the nobleman Ankarstrom, who disagreed with his reforms because they favoured the poorer classes. The King’s son threatened to tear down the building, but relented, putting it to use as a hospital during the war against Finland. Opera in Stockholm saw a revival in the nineteenth century with the debut of Jenny Lind, the Swedish Nightingale in 1835.
Lying some ten miles from the centre of Stockholm, Drottningholm is an enchanting setting for this Scandinavian festival each summer. The opera performances in the Court Theatre, built in 1776 by King Gustav III, appear to be little changed since the 18th century when Drottningholm was built as the Swedish Versailles; the Royal Palace is set in beautiful grounds beside the Malaren Lake and there is time to wander in this peaceful atmosphere as well as to visit Sweden's thriving capital, Stockholm.
