This historic Hanseatic city on the River Elbe dates back to the 9th century. Many old buildings were destroyed in the Great Fire of 1842 and more perished during the last war, but the Deichstrasse on the scenic Nicolai Canal still boasts 17th and 18th century warehouses and offices carefully preserved. Johannes Brahms was a citizen of Hamburg, so where better to hear his music. A visit to the opera house is always rewarding, and this season is the setting for many favourites. The museums of Hamburg are well worth visiting and include the Kunsthalle for painting and sculpture, the Kunst and Gewerse collection of porcelain and the Altonaer with its collection of ships' figureheads.
