VENICE
La Serenissima, the most serene republic of  Venice, has enticed and enchanted visitors for a millennium. A rich choice of walks, boat rides and monuments to visit and enjoy are all in the city which spans the centuries. Perhaps begin with a vaporetto ride which bisects and then circumnavigates the city, passing all the great palaces. Stroll in St Mark’s Square, the Piazzetta beside the Doge’s Palace and past the Bridge of Sighs. Visit the ducal church of San Marco, richly decorated in Byzantine mosaics and with many treasures brought back from the Fourth Crusade in 1204. Also visit San Zaccaria, burial place of eight Doges; see Greek icons in their church of St. George, Carpaccio’s paintings in the little Scuola di San Giorgio; the great Gothic church of SS Giovanni e Paolo and that of the Madonna dei Miracoli. The Accademia houses a comprehensive collection of the finest Venetian painters, the nearby Frari church where Titian is buried houses two of his masterpieces along with works by Bellini and Donatello. See Tintoretto’s paintings in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and San Sebastiano entirely decorated by Veronese. For the nautically minded, a visit to the Arsenal and Naval Museum is rewarding, while everyone will enjoy a boat trip to the three main islands of the lagoon: Murano, famous for its Cathedral of San Donato and glass museum, Burano, for its lacemakers, and Torcello, to visit the Cathedral with its outstanding Byzantine Mosaics and the little 12th century church of Santa Fosca. La Fenice was destroyed by fire in the year 1996 and re-opened on Friday 12th November 2004 with the performace of La Traviata.
