One of three capitals of the Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, Prague, under Charles IV in 1356, became an important centre for painting and architecture, whilst the Jews’ Altner Synagogue is the oldest in Europe. The Habsburgs added touches of Baroque splendour to create a harmonious grandeur. With its winding narrow streets of small artisan houses and squares dating from the 17th and 18th century it is the perfect setting for a weekend of opera.
