The Wexford Festival, founded in 1951, is one of the most individual European Festivals. The Wexford Gramophone Society used to organise performances of opera on gramophone records in the Theatre Royal. In 1950 their guest presenter Sir Compton McKenzie suggested they present live performances instead. This tremendous challenge was accepted by the people of Wexford and to this day it is that local community spirit that generates the very special atmosphere that has made Wexford what it is. In addition to the main operas, there is an interesting programme of fringe events such as operatic scenes, recitals, late revues and historic tours of the area.
