LYON-ST ETIENNE
Lyon, the ancient capital of Gaul, was founded in 43BC where the Rhône and Saône meet, and high above the river are remains of the Gallo-Roman civilisation. The city had a second Golden Age in the Medieval and Renaissance periods. In what is now known as ‘Old Lyon’ trade and industry flourished and Lyon became as it is today, France’s second city. Lyon has a long and lively tradition of music. The Académie Royale de Musique, opened in 1676, was renowned for performances of Lully’s operas. The old theatre has been rebuilt and extended many times. Most recently 1994 saw the inauguration of a new opera house designed by Jean Nouvel and constructed in the neo-classical shell of the original.
